The threshold limits on tax need to be increased and tax rates should be spread across more slabs so as not to hurt the salaried class. - Jayaraman

The I-T exemption for men should be Rs 1.8 lakh. Rs 1.5 lakh is peanuts. - Naveen Kumar

How do you rate Budget 2008?

This is a good budget for the salaried employees. The total savings for individuals having incomes between Rs 5 and Rs 10 lakh is Rs 45,320.

- By Raju Sarwadi (rajusarwadi@sify.com)

Instead of increasing the threshold limit, we can reduce the rate of tax. As a result, the number of taxpayers will increase and the government as well as the employees will get the benefit.

- K.S. Arumaithurai (k_s_arumaithurai@yahoo.co.in)

This is a very good budget, especially for agriculture and education. P. Chidambaram is the best.

- By Saravanan. P (plsharavanan@rediffmail.com)

If you can waive Rs 50,000 crore for farmers what about the tax on housing loan interest? That should also have been reduced.

- By Chandra Shekar.V (rilshekar@yahoo.co.in)

This is a budget keeping in mind the General Elections in 2009. Lots should have been done for the healthcare sector. FDI in retail should have been more liberal. Not a common man’s budget.

- By V. Chandra Shekar (chandra.venkataratnam@ril.com)

The finance minister should think about the exemption to small scale industries too. Though, he considers SSI as the backbone of the country, he is not at all interested in increasing the tax limit. All raw materials and inputs are increasing by the day, but he is not at all concerned. The mere limit of excise duty exemption up to a turnover of Rs 1.5 crore is something which is disturbing. It will rather ruin the growth of SSI in India.

I request our finance minister to increase the budgetary allocation for defence so that we can produce more equipment for enhancing our Air, Army and Navy power.

- By Varun Bhatnagar (storenu@rotopumps.com)

Please tax the street hawkers and give relief to the salaried persons.

- By Rajaram (rajaramghurup@rediffmail.com)

The budget has provided relief to the middle class, but gas, petrol and other basic facilities have not been taken into account. So this budget is ultimately a burden on the poor people.

- By Durdundi Birangaddi (durdundib@gmail.com)

The women employees have benefited in this budget by way of income tax.

- By J. Antony Paulraj (antopaultra@yahoo.com)

I have gone through the entire budget headlines. The raising of tax limit is an appreciable step and the focus on education is the need of the hour.

- By Poonam Choudhery (poonam2410@gmail.com)

After going through such a satisfactory Railway Budget by Lalu Prasad Yadav and such a hopeless Union Budget by P. Chidambaram, I suggest, Yadav be appointed as the finance minister of India.

- By Dheeraj Chaudhary (dheerajch@yahoo.com)

The withdrawal of banking cash transaction tax is good news for us. Will you tell us from which date will this be implemented? I am a Western Union money transfer agent. I am losing heavily by way of BCCT tax.

- By Mohd. Quiddoos (minartraels2004@yahoo.com)

It is a liberal budget and this time P. Chidambaram has provided a great relief to personal income tax payers.

This is the worst budget the finance minister has ever presented. The backbone of the country's economy is the transport but he completely missed it out.
- Jayakaanthan A (jayakaanthan@gmail.com)
The budget is sure to augment growth and will also lessen the volatility of the stock markets.
- Sidharth Paul (sidharth.paul@gmail.com)
Overall, the budget is satisfactory but the health sector should have been given greater importance.
