The threshold limits on tax need to be increased and tax rates should be spread across more slabs so as not to hurt the salaried class.

Left parties not invited for pre-Budget consultations |
|
Press Trust of India |
New Delhi, February 7, 2008 |
|
Left parties on Thursday said that they would submit their wish-list on the coming Budget to Finance Minister P Chidambaram through government because they have not been invited for pre-Budget talks so far by him.
"The practice of pre-Budget consultations with Left parties has been stopped by the Finance Minister since 2005. We were invited only in 2004 and 2005, but we would submit our pre-Budget memorandum through the government," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters.
While releasing a joint pre-Budget memorandum along with his CPI counterpart and other Left leaders, he said, "We would continue to submit our Budget proposals." When asked why they were submitting the same proposals year after year, even though these were not implemented, CPI leader A B Bardhan said, "We raise the slogan of Inqualab Zonda's day after day. Similarly, we would continue to shout for these demands."
Referring to the impact of a possible US recession on Indian economy, Karat said, "Everybody expects that there will be a US recession which will have global impacts - on developed and developing countries." To contain its impact, the government should not move towards full capital account convertibility, he said, adding India remained protected from impact of 1997 East Asian crisis due to regulations in the financial system.
He also said the Government should consider to impose tax on capital flow of foreign institutional investors besides re-introducing long term capital gain tax and raising security transaction tax to protect the Indian economy from US slowdown. |

A budget for Bharat
Buoyant tax revenues a lower fiscal deficit and an economy that's in top gear permit the FM to pump big money into agriculture and the social sector. Those efforts might help at the hustings, too. |

This is a very good budget, especially for agriculture and education. P Chidambaram is the best.

If you can waive Rs 50,000 crore for farmers what about the tax on housing loan interest? That should also have been reduced.
