I was all set to join a law school after I graduated. My father thought
I should meet one of his friends and get some informal advice from him.
The friend suggested that instead of law, I should consider studying
chartered accountancy. His rationale was that this would give me a dual
skill-set: I would learn accounting as well as gain some knowledge of
the laws related to this field. His foresight was remarkable. I
followed his advice and had a successful practice as a chartered
accountant for over 20 years before joining politics in 1996.
