India Today Art Awards 2019

The India Today Art Awards will seek to encourage and showcase the best of India Contemporary Artists and embrace all aspects of the burgeoning India art market.

Award Categories:

1.Curator of the year

  • What was the curatorial project and what was the scale of the project in the period under review
  • What were the themes the curatorial project worked on and how relevant is it to the overall art scene in India
  • What kind of artists were involved in the project and why
  • Did the curator address the divide in the world of art in the period under review in the selection of art and artists

2. New Media Artist of the year

  • What are the new media projects done by the artist in the period under review
  • What are the ways in which the artist has used new media
  • How is the work of the artist changing the art landscape in India
  • How has the artist’s work in new media evolved from his previous works

3. Retrospective Exhibition of the year

  • What was the retrospective’s theme and how many works were included in the retrospective
  • Where did this retrospective happen and how has it been beneficial towards the overall art scene
  • How has the retrospective contributed towards art
  • How many years has the artist worked and how has he evolved in terms of his medium, themes and his engagement with community

4. Artistic Collaboration of the year

  • The nature of collaboration
  • What does the collaboration seek to achieve in terms of community engagement
  • What does the collaboration do in the advancement of contemporary art in India
  • How is it different from other collaborations and what is new in the collaboration

5. Artist of the year

  • The number of exhibitions (solo and group) in the period under review
  • Any curatorial projects undertaken and the nature of those
  • Mentorship programs undertaken and the nature of those
  • How has the work evolved under the period of review in terms of themes and material and medium

6. Collector of the year

  • The kind of works collected and from where and why
  • How does the collection improve the overall quality of art in India
  • Are the works collected open to being displayed in the galleries

7. Lifetime Achievement award

  • The number of exhibitions in the career
  • How has the artist experimented with different mediums
  • Does the body of work contribute to the overall advancement of art in India
  • How many international shows the artist has been part of
  • Has the artist been part of curatorial and mentorship programs and what were these and how they have improved the art scene in India

8. Best Performance Artist of the year

  • The nature of performances in the period of review
  • How have performances evolved and what is the Indian context in terms of performances
  • How many performances the artist has been part of in the period of the review
  • How have these performances addressed the social, political and emotional issues in India under the period of review

9. Solo Exhibition of the year

  • How has the solo demonstrated evolution in the artist's repertoire
  • What are the themes explored and if they contribute to the overall improvement of art in India
  • What kinds of mediums have been explored in the solo and how does the solo exhibit stand out from the rest of the artist's exhibits and also how different it is from other solos of other artists

10. Emerging Artist of the year

  • What are the exhibitions, collaborative works and other projects done by the artist in the period under review
  • What are the ways in which the artist has used new media, addressed concerns faced by the art world (whether art has exhausted its social function) and how has he used material in the works
  • How is the work of the artist changing the art landscape in India
  • How is the artist's work different from others and whether he has had international exposure

11. Public Art Project of the year

  • What kind of public art project has been taken in the period under review
  • Where is it located and is there is an attempt to move out of big cities
  • Has the project altered the landscape in the neighbourhood and whether it has involved the local community
  • How is the project different from other public art projects
  • Does the project address local concerns and larger issues
  • Is it interactive and participatory and how

All individual participants must be Indian citizens

Decisions of the Jury will be final and binding. Shortlisted candidates will be notified via email where further information or submissions are required. It will not be possible to respond to those not shortlisted.
