To,
Shri H.R. Bhardwaj
Union Minister for Law and Justice
New Delhi
Dear Sir,
I have joined the INDIA TODAY Group's movement to Declare War on Terror.
A major issue is how to deal with the growing criminalisation straddling the political spectrum. If those who commit crimes are allowed to stand for elections because of legal loopholes, it brings disrespect to the law and encourages disruptive elements.
I humbly request you to move an amendment to Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to provide that any person who is prima facie charged by a competent judicial authority for an offence punishable by imprisonment for five years or more be disqualified from contesting an election.
The war on terror must start with a political clean up and this amendment will go a long way in doing so.
Yours sincerely,
Concerned Citizen of India
